Since the late 1990’s the Rockland Yacht Club has held an annual race on the Saturday closest to the longest day of the year. Aptly named the Solstice Race, this event is held around government marks in West Penobscot Bay. Racers can look forward to friendly, spirited competition, and a chance to knock the rust from sailing skills and reflexes dulled by our long Maine winters. Throw in a post race BBQ and pot luck at the Rockland Club house, with trophies awarded to main and jib sailors as well as two divisions of boats using spinnakers and you have a recipe for loads of fun. This is the reward for those who get their boats in early, and come out to mix it up!
All sailors are welcome! There will be three PHRF divisions: Division 1 will group ratings up to 160, Division 2 will group rates from 161 and up and Division 3 will be a non-spinnaker class (Cruising). Registration links are below. A current valid 2019 PHRF certificate is encouraged. If you do not have one you will be given the base rating for your boat as per PHRF-NE no exceptions! The Rockland Yacht Club will open at 9:00am for check in on race day, followed by a skippers meeting at 10:00am. The first warning signal will be at approximately 11:30am. The race has a planned elapsed time of 3-4 hours. The 2019 Solstice Celebration for Racers/Cruisers with a BBQ & Pot Luck Dinner at the Clubhouse for participants/guests will follow racing at 4:00pm. Set up for the cookout will begin at 1500, actual cookout will commence at 1600. Please bring a dish to share, grilled items will be available for a small fee. Registration is required and early registration is encouraged. The link to Registration Form, Sailing Instructions and Notice of Race can be found below.
