The Linda Greenlaw event at the Owls Head Transportation Museum Feb 5th was a huge success. What a coup for our 120-member club! Linda’s speech was fascinating, as she spoke about her dangerous, man dominated career as a Sword Boat Captain and long liner with all the gritty details of life at sea, sometimes with wit and humor. She was honest and self effacing in describing how she became an author and a speaker on the national stage, and said that it was the hardest job she ever had.
Our Commodore Al Hodsdon did a fine job with his introduction, and in closing presented Linda with an honorary club membership and our burgee, which she graciously accepted. However, Al had limited success impressing Linda with his “Bigger Fish Story” (something about a 650# Perch).
Cudos to past Commodore MJ Shiverick, for persuading Maine’s own, Linda Greenlaw, to speak before us. MJ attended a book signing in Bethel and had the forethought to ask Linda if she would consider speaking to our yacht club. Linda replied “Yes, I love to speak to yacht clubs”!
After the talk Linda was available for signing her latest books “SEAWORTHY” and “THE MAINE SUMMERS COOKBOOK”.
Thanks go to Doris Smart RYC Activities Chair and her team of RYC Member volunteers (Aleta Kilborn, Karen Simpson, Helen Kuhl, Sue Neisingh, and Kathy Cuthbertson) who helped make this a very memorable event. Finally thanks to all the staff the Owls Head Transportation Museum..
Christmas Banquet was attended by 41 members. We were all pleased to see Dick and Moira Bentzel – just back from London for the holidays. They are wintering just down river (Thames) from the Tower Bridge. I advised they stay away from the Tower of London lest they loose their heads. Henry VIII may haunt the grounds.
Dick and Moira were gracious enough to make the announcement of the Donovan Award. This year it went to Rick and Julie Palm – two very deserving sailors. Among their accomplishments is a rescue of Persephone during one of last years cruises. The legend of peach pancakes will live on.
The Spring Meeting of The Rockland Yacht Club was held on May 21st 2011. at 4:00 PM. We were happy to welcome the following new members: Sarah and Drew Moore, Tom Hepp, Jim and Lolly Mitchell, Kristen and jeff Blake, Mary and Randy Mraz, and Karen and Jim Simpson. Highlights of the meeting included reports about the RYC dock, and various committee reports to follow.
The evening’s Italian dinner party was a huge success! Dinner was followed by a really fun game, as evidenced by the faces in the pictures! The cost of the entertainment was $3.00, and for that there was lots of laughter. The winner at each table got to take home the pot for that table.
